The Star Online highlighted that a photograph taken at her daughter’s kindergarten on sports day two years ago has won an office clerk, a cash prize of RM3,000, and a new camera set at the 1Malaysia National Photography Competition, yesterday.

Lew Bee Choo, 41, did not expect to win as the picture of her daughter Kok Wing Yan, now eight-years-old, was a photograph any parent would take of their child. She submitted the photo after her husband told her about the competition. Husband Johny Kok, who is a professional photographer with 20 years of experience, also participated but he only won a merit award. “I think the picture my wife took is very nice. Both of us like to photograph our daughter,” he said.

The competition, organised by the MCA Information and Communications Bureau, was launched in July and was divided into three categories – national unity, history and the art of architecture. More than 1,000 photographs were submitted. Twenty-nine finalists were selected along with 10 photographs each for the merit and excellent awards out of the pool of submissions.

MCA information and communications bureau chief Senator Heng Seai Kie presented the prizes to the winners at Wisma MCA yesterday. Heng said tourists could get a feel of multi-racial and multi-cultural aspects of Malaysia through photographs.

The winning entries are on display at the gallery area on the ground floor from 9am to 5pm.
